Minimum Computer Requirements

Part of being a successful student is ensuring you have the right equipment to succeed. This includes having an up-to-date computer, the necessary software, and a fast enough Internet connection. For this, you will need...

A computer running Windows 10 or MAC OS X 10.15 or later (NOTE: Chromebooks, iPads, tablets, and netbooks do not run all necessary academic applications).
Processor: Dual Core 2.4 GHz or better.
Hard drive: 10GB or more of available space.
RAM/memory: 4GB or more.
Webcam.

Required Internet Connection

Download speed: 15 Mbps or higher.
Upload speed: 4 Mbps or higher.

Personal Computer Control

If you have a computer for your personal use, you are responsible for keeping that computer in good working order and notifying your instructor(s) if computer issues interfere with your ability to participate in any online course activities. Computers are available for student use at multiple lab locations on campus.

Students who register for hybrid and online courses are expected to have access to a computer with the required hardware, software, and Internet connection speed, as well as the ability to control settings on the computer. Therefore, the use of computers in your workplace, public libraries, or other locations where you have no control over computer or firewall settings is not recommended.

St. Kate's can assume no responsibility for the inability of computers to connect to university websites or course delivery sites.

Test Your Internet Speed for Video

Video is a common instructional tool for viewing recordings and also for synchronous video conferencing. Video works best if you have a faster internet connection. It's helpful to have some idea of how fast your connection is. Most internet services provide faster download speeds than upload speeds. Fast download speeds support video viewing. If you are using a video conferencing tool, however, you also need strong upload speed. Usually, a DSL line or a cable service will be adequate. If you experience slow reception (e.g., video sound plays intermittently), try locating closer to your router or plugging your Internet cable directly into your computer instead of connecting to a wireless router.
